Lithium Medication For Depression
Lithium is often effective in controlling manic depressive disorder (also called bi-polar mood disorder), which is characterized by wide and often disabling mood swings. In manic depressive disorder, mood can be elevated-with feelings of elation, expansiveness, and euphoria-or depressed. Lithium tends to stabilize mood
at a more normal level. In this condition, Lithium is beneficial
in ending manic and depressive episodes as well as preventing their
recurrence.
Lithium may be an effective antidepressant for some people who
have only depression without ever experiencing any manic
episodes. It is also useful as a long term treatment to prevent
recurrences of depressive episodes.
However, Lithium treatment is somewhat complicated (although not
particularly dangerous) and many nonpsychiatric physicians have not
been trained in its use. If your doctor prescribes Lithium as a
treatment for your depression, we suggest you read the book
“Lithium and Manic Depression: A Guide”, available on
Amazon.com, or your local bookstore or library.
