Acupuncture
is an ancient practice, originating in China over three thousand years
ago. It is one of the most widely used healing methods in the
world, said to cure everything from migraine headaches to depression.
The practice is based on the theory that “Qi”
(“chi”) is a life energy that controls the mind and
body. It is believed to flow through the body via
“meridians” or channels, with 20 “meridians” in
total. Traditional Chinese medicine states that inbalances of
this flow can cause illness, and that acupuncture can restore this flow.
A recent study by the University of Arizona found that the majority of participants had significant relief from depression after acupuncture treatment.
Many reported the procedure improved their overall well being and
increased their energy. It seems the only drawback to acupuncture
is that many insurance companies will not cover the procedure, although
some progressive insurance companies have recently reversed this
policy.
